Nowadays, a FIFA World Cup™ without volunteers is unthinkable. The tournament would be impossible to stage without the enthusiastic support of unpaid helpers, so in one sense, volunteers are just as important as the stars on the field of play.
As assistants in the Media Centres, on stewarding duty at the stadiums, deploying their specialist IT expertise or as drivers, the FIFA World Cup cannot be successfully organised without volunteer support. Due to their wide-ranging and frequent contact with visitors, volunteers are vital ambassadors for the tournament. Their helpfulness and friendliness contribute significantly to a positive lasting impression of a FIFA World Cup.
Some 70,000 people from all over the world applied for positions as volunteers at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, the first finals on African soil. Based on interviews in South Africa and at 52 embassies around the world, 18,000 applicants were selected to work at the finals on a wide variety of tasks.
FIFA has already received initial enquiries from Brazil from people volunteering for duty at the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013 and the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil. However, we would inform interested parties that applications cannot be accepted at the present time. Once the next volunteer programme is launched, FIFA will publish all relevant information about the programme via the official website FIFA.com, including details of how to apply online – so it's worth checking FIFA.com regularly for the latest news.
