Ronaldo has long enjoyed a special relationship with the FIFA World Cup™, having come away with a winners’ medal at USA 1994, finished runner-up to hosts France in 1998 and spearheaded his country’s triumph at Korea/Japan 2002.
Having also led the line for A Seleção at Germany 2006, O Fenômeno is now set to experience his fifth FIFA World Cup finals after being unveiled as part of the Sao Paulo state committee for Brazil 2014.
“I want to help the Sao Paulo government to provide the best FIFA World Cup host venue of all time. I’m hoping to make a big contribution to this project,” said the legendary goal-getter on 16 February, just two days after bringing his stellar playing career to a close.
Equally enthused about Ronaldo’s involvement was Ricardo Teixeira, President of the Organising Committee for Brazil 2014. “He’s a very important signing for Sao Paulo’s project and the FIFA World Cup project in Brazil as a whole,” said Teixeira, who also attended the ceremony where the former Corinthians striker’s new role was revealed.
“Ronaldo’s a player who’s made an indelible mark on the history of the game, not just through the goals he’s scored but by giving the world an example of how obstacles can be overcome. I’m sure that he will shine just as brightly in this new role as he did out on the pitch,” Teixeira concluded.
